When I try to open one of my .fla files this message comes up

"there is not enough memory to open this scene. Your document is not damaged and may be safely saved.
To increase available memory, close open documents or quit and use the Get Info command in the Finder to allocate more memory to flash"

Although , I'm on a P.C. my search results for this seemed to indicate that these instructions are more applicable to a mac.
How can I allocate more memory to flash?

Thanks to crusaderx's posting, I noticed one of my tranparent image file was corrupted in library. I kept on importing the same corrupted image file from my hard drive to replace the same corupted file in the library. I made a whole new image file in photoshop and imported to the library. THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED! CHECK YOUR LIBRARY FOR RECENT IMPORTED FILES FOR CORRUPTION. YOU CANNOT PREVIEW THE IMAGE IN THE LIBRARY IF IT'S CORRUPTED. REPLACE IT OR TAKE IT OUT AND YOU SHOULD SOLVE THE MEMORY PROBLEM.

Hi, i have been recieving this message "there is not enough memory to open this scene. Your document is not damaged ......use the Get Info command in the finder to allocate more memory to flash". i'm on a mac, so i can get to the Get Info window, but under the box for memory it doesn't let you manually change the number to increase it? does any one have an idea how to increase it or why its doing that?

I have the same problem but managed to fix it by going back into photoshop. Making sure the edges were clean. Then resaving the images.

Saved it as the same file name re opend it in flash and the whole problem came right.

Hope this works for you guys.....

Yes, I'm having the same problem. Got 1.5 G of RAM and a 2.1 MHz iMac. I'm working on a vectors-only fla file and it gives me the "There is not enough memoery to complete the operation" spiel. I tried ringing Macromedia who said it was because of corrupted imported files, but I'm not using any other files, only vectors. And all I'm trying to do is cut and paste a simple shape.

I have also tried calling Apple and they say it's a Flash problem.

Any advice would be great.

i had this problem too, but in my case i figured it out...
i had one png file that was either corrupt (maybe non standard png) or was formated in a way that annoys Flash (its possible other people have many pics like this)

my problem was as follow:
i have a png image with a transparent background...
the floating portion of the image (non transparent part) touches the edge of the image, the only one in my collection... and is saved with Photoshop.
all i did was delet the image from flash... reload it into photoshop, nudge it over a few pixels so that the "transparent portion" of the image totally surrounds the floating part... like an island.
resaved the image, reloaded it into flash, resaved the scene in a new name and all way fine.
I dont know if this is an error in photoshop generating incorrect png files when transparency is selected and the floating portion reaches the edge, or if the png format itself has a problem, or if flash is reading it wrongly... either way this fixed it... it would be interesting to know if other can fix this problem the same way...

usually transparent images are floating (to show all the drop shadown or whatever) my one photo had a hard edge that was on the pixel edge... oh one more thing i did in case it matters is a iselected "interlace" in the png save options.... i dont have time to retest to see if that is the problem or just the edge issue....

but this should fix your scenes....

if you publish the nbroken scene it will replace all images with a red box that are broken... as well in the library they show as a grey box with he words image failed to load or something like that...so they are easy to find.

Hello, I have been having the same problem (memory error, running a PC, bitmaps involved) and I really need a fix. I have invested a huge amount of time into this project, and I really would not like to lose most of my work (I don't have a recent backup). Just give the word and I'll post it online - I don't need anything in the library and all of the bitmaps can be deleted, so if anyone can open this file and resave it....please!!!

Please email solution.

I desperately need a fix for this problem too! I hope someone has figured this out. I imagine that by now there must be a solution. I would appreciate it if anyone would share it with me or else I'll lose a ton of work. I know now from looking around the internet that I should be taking some precautions to avoid this in the future.

Any help would very much appreciated!

i got exactly the same problem.I am using macOSX and flashMX 2004.
i also imported some pictures. They were not so huge and in gif format(44kb).
if i lost animations that i made by using gif's, I AM DEAD...
When i check Get Info max. mem. size is 128000 kb.i can change it if i first click on
open with mac os9 and than uncheck it.I don't think it helps!.

I NEED A SOLUTION OR A NEW JOB

yup, i get the same exact problem, tons of memory....

flash turns my bit maps to red squares when i open the fla, so i have to re-import the images and publish again every time i work on that file... such a pain in the butt.

Hey I had the same problem! I have Windows XP and I kept looking for the 'Get Info' command and I'm like, "There is no 'Get Info" command!" I tried deleting a video I had, that didn't work. So what's the deal? What exactly do I do? I have more than enough memory on my computer (512MB) so.......I dunno. Somebody help!!!!

No, I don't think that was a happy ending, but instead an annoying work-around. This is obviously a flaw in Macromedia's programming. At the very least they should have double-checked and made sure that PC users wern't getting instructions that were only applicable to MacOS.

Further, how the hell can the FLA be too large when Flash let you import everything, build it, and compile it? Why didn't it do a size check as it was importing everything and complain when you were building it?

magicgeorge Posted - 12/11/2002 : 8:26:02 PM
Thanks for the advice Robert I don't actually think I know anyone with a mac though!!
i worked it out though. The files I was importing where just too big. i was using bitmaps since the flash would convert them into jpeg quality pics or whatever it does. This meant although the exported flash was an Ok size the size of the files in the library where huge. So I just optimized them all a bit before importing them and I never got that message again.
Don't you love a happy ending
